BU NEWS

Welcome to The  BU News page, a newsletter sort of a thing, some might call it a blog. Here I'll tell you about what's going on at the store, new stuff, birds, generally things we think that you might find interesting. It's updated regularly so check back often. Depending on how darn bored you are you can read back (or scroll down) a few years.

07/27/10 Here's some good news about the Spix Macaw Baby chick helping to bring world’s rarest parrot back from extinction | Metro.co.uk

07/26/10 Looking for something to do Saturday night? 6 pocs 7.jpg (59941 bytes) See what the bird guy does in his free time.

06/22/10 Here's a teaser for you, it won't be out for quite a while though YouTube - Rio Official Trailer (2011) HD

06/15/10 Hey, look who's back ! After a year or so away Michelle is now back on staff. michelle3.jpg (49792 bytes) She'll be here most days and with the other staff I'm gonna sneak outta here once in a while. What, can't be, no way, Paul not in the store, we thought he lived there!

06/05/10 Just like to thank all of you, and there were a lot of you who came out to see my band at Johnny's Irish Pub last night, man what a turnout. It's always a good time when the place is full. Thanks

06/05/10 We've been busy this week, a whole wall full of new toys, took two days just to get them out, and a large cage shipment as well. I even got some birds in this week, the store is packed.

05/31/10 Part of my obligation to selling pets is to educate people who get them. Years ago I started a local bird club, that has unfortunately since folded, just for the purpose to educate people about their birds. So when asked to go out in the public and let people know about birds we usually try to oblige, as was the case last week when a couple of the staff went to a nursury school w/ some birds. Here are a couple of pictures from then. nurs schol 1.jpg (54911 bytes) nurs skol 2.jpg (74853 bytes) nurs skol 3.jpg (99393 bytes) nurs skol 4.jpg (83855 bytes) these are thumbnail pics click to enlarge

04/18/10 So I got up a bit early today and did a bit of updating to the web site, I should be cutting my lawn but it's too cold again, I added a new link on the directions page, added stuff on the new products page, even added a new frequently asked question on the FAQ page. As many of you know the Babies page is updated every day, some stooge lost a parakeet last week and the Lost and Found page even has something on it. Clip your birds wings, please. I would have added pics to the BOTW page but you need to send some new ones in, I love participation from you folks. Let's see how far away you people are that check this out. If you haven't checked out the YouTube video it's just a click away and even if you don't have a Facebook account you can still check out all the pics, videos and comments there too.

04/10/10 Man oh man, first it's a web cam then it's Facebook then it's YouTube, where will the technology end? Especially for you folks who are out of town and are curious about the store, check out our YouTube vid. It's almost as if I'm living in the 21st century. Go ahead, try it. you tube logo.jpg (3116 bytes)

04/03/10 If any of you have seen all or part of the series on the Discovery Channel, it's also on Animal Planet, and TLC too I think, it's fantastic. It's on Sunday evenings at 8 PM and I believe this week they have an hour about birds. Check your listing, set your recorder, you'll love it.

03/31/10 This was brought to my attention by a regular customer,

02/17/10 Finally, our two African Pied Crows, Voodoo & Oreo are cohabitating, it took a couple attempts but they seem pretty happy together now. We are hoping they are happy enough to raise a family this year, we gave them a nest which they loved so much they shredded it in about a week. They'll get another.

04/17/09 Man the folks at Park Ridge Hospital / Unity Hospital can sure cheer a guy up. I went in today for some minor knee surgery and the first person that helps me is a nice lady / customer who got a parakeet from me and got to enjoy him for 12 years before he passed on. Pretty good life for the little bird. So off I go in for the best hour and a half of sleep I may have ever had (surgery), so good I may go back just to see if they can knock me out for a couple of days, maybe induce a coma just so I can get some rest y'know. So when I wake up I find that another customer autographed my new dressing on my knee, hmmm, now that I think of it I should check to see if anything else has been signed. Pretty funny. Thanks Tina. Space is limited and we get full during school breaks and holidays so plan ahead. Call for details. Don't know whether your bird is a male or female? 10/8/07  When people need birds for an event who do they turn to? Us, we've got birds. A couple of weeks ago we did a grand opening for a new digital photography studio. They wanted something loud, large, and colorful and since my father died many years ago and he couldn't make it, we decided to send Simon, a blue & gold macaw, he was exactly what they were looking for. Then, just this past weekend, one of the local country clubs was having a "Playboy Mansion Night", and they were looking for several large birds to add to the atmosphere. We took three macaws and a cockatoo and all were perfectly behaved, quite a night at "the mansion". I saw many old friends (we're talking from high school now), customers, and bunnies...lots of bunnies...as far as the eye could see... bunnies, with ears and cotton tails bunnies. It was a long, but enjoyable night. Sorry, can't post any pictures, mmmmmmmmm bunnies. ears & tail oct 6.jpg (5457 bytes)

05/07/06   Ok, for the last week or so I've been fighting this chest/head cold, it's just about gone now but man, tough to breathe, can't think straight, and no speaking voice as many of you who spoke with me realize, you all probably have my cold now, HA. Special orders again didn't come in for people, it seemed that I had to take every phone call, constantly running late...blah blah blah. In general just a rotten week for me. Then on Thursday I get a call from a nice customer who has just lost his senegal parrot, last seen cruising over the neighbors roof and now he can't find him. Man I hate these calls, every one of them is totally avoidable. Saturday during our grooming session "Jeff" comes in because he was in the area and wondered if I'd heard anything. No sooner did I see him that I remembered talking to a lady the previous evening, Friday, about a bird she'd found in her driveway. She described it and we decided it was some mutation of love bird. I took her name and number and was going to put it on this web site's lost and found page, never got to it as I was too busy falling asleep in front of the Buffalo Sabres hockey game, (they won in overtime by the way, GO SABRES!). Anyway, got the phone # for him and he got his bird back within minutes, the finder got the reward, and everyones happy. For having kind of a crappy week this was the definite high light, remember clip your birds wings, don't think that if they don't fly in your house that they won't fly when you take them outside. No bird likes you so much that it'll never fly from you. Oh, I'm feeling much better now.

06/19/05   Here are some videos and some information on the magnificent Hyacinth Macaw. HYACINTH MACAW PROJECT just go to the left side bar and click on videos.

06/16/05  Ok, here's some news for you people who've had to wait months to get in to get their birds wings, beak, and nails groomed. Now you realize that if you've purchased a bird from us you receive free grooming as long as you have the bird. The longer I'm in business, the more birds I sell and the wait to get in gets longer as well. We've gotten to notice many people make their next appointment at the time they get their bird groomed. However you never really know that far in advance if your bird will need its wings trimmed and many birds come in for their appointment and they don't need clipping, thus wasting your time, my time, and somebody elses time that may actually need clipping. This is how we get booked out 3-4 months ahead.  So, one thing we've done to try and shorten up the wait period is we've started to do grooming, by appointment, on some Wednesday evenings, mainly smaller birds. However, being that I've got to bring in extra help we're charging a flat fee of $10.00 whether it's a budgie, conure or an African Grey, everyone pays the same on Wednesday. It'll still be free on Saturdays if you got your birds from us, but for those of you who can't wait, 10 bucks. I must add that it's still considerably cheaper than going nearly anywhere else. We can also do the DNA sexing on Wednesdays and have the results back about a week later, $35.00 for that.

04/08/03   Holy cow, what an ice storm here in Western New York. Hopefully most of you are back with power now to help keep your birds warm. So far I've heard of just  one casualty (from a smoke filled room, from a chimney) not from things getting too cold. My own birds tolerated temperatures down to the upper 30's and low 40's with no ill effects. If you didn't know what the temperature was they weren't giving me any indication, acting totally normal.

If you're not with heat yet... keep your birds away from kerosene heaters as they are quite sensitive to the fumes, offer them enough light to get enough food so their bodies can generate their own heat. A normal healthy bird should be able to tolerate temperatures as low as freezing. Remember some of your birds came from Florida where it freezes once in a while. It freezes in Australia, and parts of South America  as well. Good Luck

11/26/01   Any of you folks in the Rochester, NY area can see a new motion picture that opens at the Marketplace Cinemas this Sunday. The name is "Checkout" and the reason that I mention this is because we,(Birds Unlimited) supplied the trained Tres Maria Amazon for the movie. It apperantly has a big part....Oscar nominations perhaps?

10/29/01   OK folks it's that time of year again when you start w/ the scented candles, potpourri, kerosene heaters... Remember these things all can kill your beloved pet if they are too close to them. Whenever you have a question if a product is safe or not check to see if there's an 800 number on the package and ask. And keep your birds away from the Halloween chocolate!

07/25/01   It's that time of year again when those little moths start showing up from the seed. A few things you can do to keep down the problem is to freeze the seed for 48 hrs or more and that should kill the larvae, or micro wave it for one minute on low heat, then stir, then one more minute on low. If you have moths cruising your living space try a REVENGE STRIP, this is not a sticky strip but a vapor type of thing that I've used for years and have found them safe around my birds. By the way we happen to have them here, $6.98

07/10/01   Thanks again to everyone who has dropped change into the World Parrot Trust can on our counter. We were able to send another $46.00 off to that organization. Check out their web site. www.worldparrottrust.org

06/29/01   We will be closed on Wednesday July 4th, will reopen on Thursday at 11:00

06/26/01   I just a call from my Senators office with the word that the bills (see below) did not come up for a vote this session. They probably will be reintroduced again next year. This does not mean that pet owners have nothing to fear. Please contact your local legislator or Senator and talk to them about these two bills. We don't need to be criminals for keeping a cage of finches do we?

READ THIS RIGHT NOW IN NEW YORK STATE THERE ARE BILlS IN THE SENATE AND THE ASSEMBLY THAT MAY OUTLAW THE OWNERSHIP OF YOUR PETS. THATS RIGHT. SENATE BILL  4755  AND ASSEMBLY BILL 7375 MAY OSTENSIBLY BAN POSSESSION AND TRADE OF "WILD" ANIMALS. hOWEVER THE LEGISLATIVE DEFINITION IS SO BROAD AND SO AMBIGUOUS THAT IT COULD INCLUDE ALL BIRDS, ALL AMPHIBIANS, REPTILES, ALL FISH, AND OTHER SPECIES COMMONLY KEPT AS PETS. cONTACT YOUR LOCAL SENATOR OR ASSEMBLY PERSON TO DISCUSS THIS. dON'T WASTE TIME, ACT NOW.

06/13/01   It's getting to be the time of year that people take their birds outside. Please be careful, there are many cases of people losing their treasured pets even with clipped wing feathers. A gust of wind will carry your bird a long way. Hawks have killed many pet birds. I hate to tell you that your bird does not love you so much that he will never fly away from you. They will fly and the chance of getting one back is low. Please be careful. If you feel you need to go outside with your bird use a harness as a little insurance.

05/19/01   Check out the new Lory exhibit at The Seneca Park Zoo. You  walk among the birds and can even feed them with a cup of nectar. More birds are in holding and will be released soon.

05/16/01   On Saturday May 20, Sonnenberg Gardens is having a Bird Exhibition. It runs from 9:30 to 5:30 at 151 Charlotte Street in Canandaigua. www.sonnenberg.org Various presentations will run throughout the day.

05/02/01   If you happen upon an orphaned baby bird in the wild it is usually best left alone. If you're sure the mother isn't returning call us and we can suggest a licensed rehabilitator to raise the baby. It's not nice to fool with mother nature.

05/02/01     It's baby bird season folks, your greatest selection is nearly upon us. Babies come in every week. Here at Birds Unlimited we only carry birds, we don't pretend to know about other types of critters. Here in New York State we have what is called the New York State Wild Bird Law, what it basically says is that people and stores in New York cannot sell imported birds. Birds that have an open band (one that has a seam) are not allowed to be sold unless the seller has a permit from the state. There are a few species that do not have to be banded but most need to be. Here at Birds Unlimited all of our birds are captive raised and conform to New York laws. Many other stores in the Rochester area do not, question the origin of these birds !

3/28/00     In early March we (all the staff here at Birds Unlimited) had the opportunity to hear bird trainer extrodinaire, Steve Martin speak at a local bird meeting. His views and techniques are quite different than many you regularly read about. Having seen Steve on a number of occasions I don't think there is a person who can put himself in the birds position better than he can. He seems to understand what's going on in a birds mind. If you have a chance to see him speak do so. If you can't, check out our links page. He has some great articles on behavior and training.

3/27/00     On May 17 the Humane Society at Lollypop Farm  has again invited me to speak on pet birds. I'll be going over why people keep them and why some people should not. I'll do a brief species overview and answer any questions that you may have. For more information contact Lollypop Farm at 223-1330.
